The Race Recap that Wasn't and House Stuff
It's been ten days since I ran the Loon Mountain Race and the memory of the race feels so distant. I never had time to write a re-cap, but it's safe to say that I struggled during that race feeling mentally distracted and physically drained.
The day after the race we learned that they had finished priming the sheetrock and we launched into Project House.
In five days, we painted every room but the living room, etched and cleaned the concrete floors and then my husband stained and sealed the floors last weekend. It was a crazy week,
I lost track of what day it was, spent more time in Lowe's and Home Depot than I spent with my kids and ate whatever was most convenient--there was one day where I bought a package of Cliff Bars to have one as a mid morning snack and went back to work on the house and didn't have time to get anything else so all I ate that day were Cliff Bars.
As a plumbing contractor, this is basically what my husband does on a daily basis. Not the painting and floors, but dealing with a million things going wrong and still being able to get the job done. I have no idea how he does it. There was one day I was in tears.
The most DIY I've ever done is re-painting a dresser, but if you watch enough YouTube videos you can pretty much figure out how to do anything. Next up is installing pebble tile on the wall in powder room. I'm pretty sure that between the knowledge I've gained from watching videos online, plus my type-A, OCD tendencies that I can make it look pretty good--even though I've never done anything like that before.
When all is said and done and this year of being displaced and building is finally over, my hope is that we'll feel like it was worth it. Right now I'm teetering on the edge of resenting this house and the wake of change and disruption it has caused in our lives.
Thankfully a two-week running transition coincided nicely with all this craziness. After the Loon Mountain Race my coach scheduled two weeks or rest and recovery. I've gone for a few runs here and there when I've felt mentally like I've needed it, but for the most part each day has been a complete rest day.
Between some of the work last week I was able to make it to the physical therapist for a preventative session. I've had some chronic tightness in my left hip that just won't go away. I needed to her opinion and find out what I could be doing differently to deal with it because it seemed like the PT and strength routine I've been doing for a long time is limited in it's ability to help.
She felt around, did some dry needling and then walked me through a whole new set of dynamic exercises to do on my left side. I've been doing a lot of static strength drills: bridges, lateral side-steps with a band and step ups to try and strengthen the left glute, but she suggested that I needed to start performing these same types of exercises in a more dynamic way.
It was really helpful and I'm looking forward to incorporating these moves into my workout routine when I get back to regularly scheduled training.
It may be a while before I get to the blog again, but I'm always posting to Instagram!
