Let it Go

I must hear that song 45,987,263 times a day; it is one of the perks of having a four year old daughter. It has become clear to me this past week that I won't be "one with the wind and sky" anytime soon--like I was in my marathon a month ago. I'm at the point where I've let go of my summer racing plans. I only had two races firmly scheduled but was planning on adding in 5K's as they were convenient to our schedule. Looks like none of that will be happening.

Though I've made progress with my glute strength and my hamstring is much less bothersome than it has been in the past, it is my knee (most likely ITBS but not officially diagnosed as such) that is hampering my summer plans. At first I was mad, mostly at myself for the stupidity of running too much, too soon after the marathon. But what's done is done and I can reverse it or change it, and it seems it has no intentions of resolving itself anytime soon.

I took Monday and Tuesday completely off, tried to run longer on Wednesday and Thursday which both went well. Then Friday I was feeling rather gun hoe and after a warm up mile and some form drills I thought I might attempt 'just one' interval. I made it one 600 and my knee started talking. I stopped (at least I've learned enough to stop) and drove home.

I've taken the last two days off. It seems that longer isn't working and faster isn't working. Which pretty much means racing won't work. So there it is. Summer racing is out. Let it go. I've probably spent the last few weeks trying to think up scenarios in which I could be in shape to race, but it's becoming clear that that's not a very realistic place to be.

All I can really focus on is working the PT and not over-stressing my knee.

Have you ever gotten to the point where you realize you need to "let go" of your plans due to an injury?
