Why Materials Matter: Sustainable Summer Styles from prAna

This post was created in partnership with prAna. All the opinions expressed here are my own.

When we shop for clothes we often think, "will this fit?" or "will it look good?" and don't necessarily ask, "where did this fabric come from?" But thinking about sustainability has me checking labels to see exactly what each item is made of and where it comes from.

I find myself gravitating towards buying clothes from companies like prAna because without checking the label I know that there commitment to sustainability means each piece they offer is sourced and made in a mindful way. Their spring line is chock-full of great options for both him and her, which is why I snagged a couple summery items for my hubby.

When shopping for some new summer duds here are some things to look for:

BlueSign

Third party certifications like BlueSign help uphold eco-friendly standard in the apparel industry. Blue Sign works to reduce waste and environmental impact all along the textile industry supply chain. Garments that have the BlueSign tag are made with BlueSign approved fabrics and processes. Look for these labels on prAna clothing.

Organic Cotton

Growing conventional cotton requires the use of almost 25% of all insecticides and more than 10% of all pesticides in the world. Organic cotton on the other hand reduces the use of toxic chemicals and ensures the soil it is grown in remains healthy. This prAna button down is 60% organic cotton.

Hemp

Because hemp is heartier than other plants it doesn't need fertilizers or pesticides, it is also drought resistant. Fields in which hemp are planted can often be replanted immediately after harvest since hemp is so beneficial to the soil. Hemp resembles linen in it's feel and look, yet doesn't require ironing since it doesn't wrinkle as much. These prAna shorts are 53% hemp.
