Training Update: 3K Time Trial and learning patience

This week is week 7 of an eight week base-building phase I've been running through. For the most part I've been really consistent and have averaged 38 miles each week for the past seven weeks. Some weeks were more (45) and some were less (32).

Next week I'll head to the indoor track and hopefully start to increase my level of fitness beyond where it is now.

I've seen steady improvement over the last six weeks and paces that were a struggle to hit in September and October now come with ease.

Shorts on Thursday. Freezing on Sunday.

I also clocked in two time trials on the track: a 5K in 20:34 and a 3K in 11:45. I wanted both to be faster, but I think they are pretty accurate indicators of my current level of fitness. It can be easy to push and push for improvement, but not have the patience it takes to get there. I found this quote to be especially applicable this week after I was a little disappointed with my 3K time:

"Don't try to rush progress. Remember- step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction." --Kara Goucher

There's part of me that is waiting for that great oh.my.gosh breakthrough run, the kind I had in the spring of 2014. The runs where I amazed even myself. But those haven't come yet and probably won't come for a while. Shaving time off race paces doesn't happen magically, there's a lot of work that goes into it. I'm ready to get on the track and start doing that work in a few weeks.

For now I'll stay focused on these last two weeks of base building, knowing that will be the foundation I need for improvement.

Ever feel impatient with your training? Have you ever surprised yourself with a breakthrough run?
