Smoothies that Stick: add-ins to give your smoothies staying power
This post is sponsored by Stonyfield and Nature's Path, but the opinions expressed here are my own.
For the better part of three months I've been drinking a smoothie almost daily. Smoothies haven't been a regular part of my diet until recently when I realized I wasn't making them the right way. I used to simply toss in water, frozen fruit and protein powder, but an hour later I'd find myself starving. Even after I started adding healthy fats in the form of chia seeds, nut butter or avocado the smoothies just didn't have staying power.
It wasn't until I beefed up my smoothie recipe with the addition of Stonyfield Lowfat French Vanilla Yogurt, whole grains that my smoothies started to "stick." These simple additions have made the difference between a smoothie feeling like a yummy drink and a smoothie filling me up like a meal.
Lately I've been adding in and topping off my smoothies with Nature's Path Qi'a (pronounced "key-ah") Organic Cereal. The Cereal mixture combines chia, sliced almonds, hemp, buckwheat and vanilla-infused cranberries. It's a great addition to the smoothie or the perfect crunchy topper.
And if I'm in the mood for something a little more seasonal I've been mixing in Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola as the whole grain ingredient of my smoothie.
Here are the recipe's I've been using for a delicious smoothie that keeps me going all day:
Vanilla Crunch Smoothie
1 cup Stonyfield Lowfat Vanilla Yogurt
1 tsp organic vanilla extract
1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen berries
1 tbs. organic peanut butter
2 scoops protein powder
1/4 cup organic steel cut oats
1 scoop greens mix
splash of milk if it is too thick
Top with 1-2 tbs. Nature's Path Qi'a Cereal
Pumpkin Spice Smoothie
1 cup Stonyfield Lowfat Vanilla Yogurt
dash of cinnamon
1/4 cup Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola
2 scoops protein powder
1 scoop greens mix
1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen berries
1 tbs. organic almond butter
splash of milk if it is too thick
And when I'm not adding healthy whole grains from Nature's Path into my smoothies I'm using them as a topping to yogurt and salads too!
