Curbing the Sweet Cravings

I just want to wish my coaching client, Anna a HUGE congrats for killing her marathon goal at the Wrightsville Beach Marathon this weekend. Anna ran 3:27, a 9 minute PR and her first BQ! And what's even crazier is that her last two miles were her fastest! I'm so proud of how hard she worked. Way to go Anna!

Something happened when I entered the third trimester: suddenly I found myself craving SWEET. A far departure from the salty/spicy cravings of the first trimester. For a while clementines were my go-to. I couldn't peel them fast enough. But suddenly clementines weren't enough. I needed more. I needed chocolate and popsicles and Klondike bars and anything that wasn't a clementine.

I've been satisfying that "need" for a couple weeks. And it culminated in eating nearly half of this "Tiger Cake." In one sitting. All by myself. It was yummy. And it satisfied the craving...because I felt sick after. it was just too much. And my body, which I normally fuel with really wholesome foods, wasn't happy.

I've felt pretty blah recently, like I haven't fully recovered from the fatigue of being sick a few weeks ago. As in extra fatigue on top of normal pregnancy fatigue. Normally I'm up at 5am to work and run or exercise, but the past few weeks I haven't been able to budge when my alarm goes off. And I'm pretty sure it has to do with the sugar I've been pumping into my body, not to mention that a constant drip of sugar is helping the baby.

I was feeling like I needed a bit of a kick start in the right direction and I just happened to see Laura's Sugar Detox Challenge on Monday. I'm taking the seven-day challenge as a way to get my out of the sugar rut and into some healthier choices.

I see labor and delivery as an "athletic event," my body will be under stress and I'd like to be firing on all cylinders rather than feeling sluggish and run down thanks to a less-than-ideal diet. Overloading on sugar can negatively affect you in so many ways (check out Laura's post on Sugar Overgrowth and Gut Health for more info), so I'm looking at this seven day challenge as a step in the right direction to a healthier gut and to higher energy levels.

In the meantime I'm trying to reach for more clementines and "treats" that satisfy without making me feel sick, like the new Oh My Yog! from Stonyfield. I dug into this Madagascar Vanilla and the creamy and subtly sweet yogurt satisfied my sweet craving perfectly.

Unfortunately I ran out, and my local grocery is still working on getting it on the shelves. But I'm still snacking on a few other goodies that Stonyfield sent: their new Organic Protein Smoothie and their Greek with Chia yogurt.

I like each of them for different reasons: the OP Smoothie has 15 grams of organic protein, the Greek Chia has the added boost of 300mg of Omega3's from the chia seeds and of course the Oh My Yog! is delicious and indulgent but still packs a nutritional punch with 7 grams of protein.

And I'm pretty sure protein is what I've been lacking and leading me to indulge my sweet tooth. So I'll be swapping out the sugar for protein, making sure to start my morning with eggs instead of the cereal and bagel I've been selecting most mornings. In hopes that making a better choice in the morning will domino into better choices throughout the day.

I think when it comes to diet, there's always and ebb and flow and recognizing when you're ready to shift in a different direction is important. I think it's time for a shift and now is the time.

Have you ever done a sugar detox? How does your diet ebb and flow and what do you do to make a change and keep that change?
